No diacetyl in Morgan Brand Microwave Popcorn

Consumers of Morgan Brand Microwave Popcorn can pop away without worry.  The popcorn packaged and distributed by Service Enterprises, Inc. (SEI) of Redwood Falls does not contain the butter flavoring chemical diacetyl, which has been linked to a lung ailment suffered by popcorn plant workers.

“When major popcorn producing companies’ plans to remove diacetyl from their products began spreading in the national news recently, we were pleased to know our popcorn products do not contain the chemical,” said Marcia Heiling, SEI Resource Development Director.  “We have sent notices to our vendors so they can inform customers if they ask about Morgan Microwave Popcorn.”

Makers of five of the nation’s largest selling microwave popcorn brands – Orville Redenbacher, Act II, Pop Secret, Jolly Time and Pop Weaver - have publicly announced plans to change recipes to remove diacetyl from their products.

The chemical has been linked to cases of bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare life-threatening disease also often called popcorn lung.  The alert was issued after a Denver hospital reported what doctors there believe to be the first case of a consumer who developed lung disease from the fumes of microwaving popcorn several times a day for years.

Service Enterprises, Inc., which provides vocational training, employment and other services to individuals with disabilities, purchased the Morgan Brand Popcorn Company in 2005, and added the microwave popcorn in October of 2006.  The popcorn is distributed to 84 customers in 64 communities throughout central and southern Minnesota.
