Morgan Brand Popcorn Provides
New Work, Business Venture

A great new opportunity 'popped' up for Service Enterprises, Inc., in 2005 with the purchase of Morgan Brand Popcorn.

The purchase was completed February 1, 2005 and SEI began packaging the popcorn in the assembly area of its Redwood Falls facility on February 25. SEI now processes the white hulless and yellow hulless popcorn and distributes it for resale to stores throughout Southwest and West Central Minnesota.

'The board and staff recognized the value of this venture to create more work for our clients,' said Executive Director Stephen Kohn.

Clients at SEI do all the labeling, packaging, weighing, sealing, material handling and inventory, and can package about 20 cases of popcorn in one day, which is 5, five-pound bags or 12, 2-pound bags.

The number of stores selling the popcorn more than doubled in the first eight months SEI took over as distributor. At present, Morgan Brand Popcorn is distributed to 55 customers in 37 communities in the area. Morgan popcorn is also popped and served at bars and convenience stores in the area.

The popcorn business provides regular, meaningful work opportunities for clients served by SEI. In addition, proceeds from the popcorn sales are reinvested in SEI's programs for people with disabilities.
